🖍️ Tools For Success

  • Paper (Our Free How To Draw Template PDF)
  • Pencil
  • Polymer Eraser
  • Outline Markers
  • Coloring Tools (I recommend Crayola's 140 Piece Coloring Case)

🎨 Parents:The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you're done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

Step-by-Step: Draw an Airplane

Yes, there's a lot of airplane types out there from cargo, seaplanes, helicopters, to other military-style planes. But by far the most recognizable airplane for most people is the long, narrow commercial planes we see flying, oh so often, in the sky.

  1. Outline the airplane's top cockpit by drawing a long horizontal line with a short curve on the left end;
  2. Then draw a c-shaped airplane nose connected to the cockpit. Stretch the horizontal line under the nose to sketch the plane's underside.
  3. Draw a rectangular wing adjacent to the airplane's body. The part of the wing that is closer to the body has a larger width than the farther part.
  4. Then, complete the airplane's body by drawing a horizontal line from the wing to the body's end.
  5. Repeat the step in doing the airplane's wing to draw the tail at the end of the body, but draw a smaller one.
  6. Then, add another wing beneath the airplane's body and parallel to the other wing. The right-wing should appear shorter than the left-wing.
  7. On top of the airplane's body end, draw another rectangular tail. This is bigger than the first tail but smaller than the wings.
  8. Lastly, draw the rectangular windshield in the flight deck and five small circular windows on the body. You can add more windows and even a center body door for accuracy if you would like.
  9. Before we fly with our airplane, let's color it with a light grey and bright red tail, but you can choose the color of your own!

Commonly, airplanes go with the official colors of their airline. Or sometimes they have a whole body decal to promote as ads. It's 100% up to you!

We didn't draw the engine propellers typically under airplane wings but if you want to be more accurate, feel free to add two cylindrical drums to the underside center of each wing!
